Current Affairs 29/09/21: IGL Signed MoU with South Delhi for Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) with South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). The memorandum was signed with an aim to set up a waste-to-energy plant in Delhi. The plant will be used to convert Municipal Solid Waste into Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) and CBG will be used as fuel for running vehicles. The Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) Scheme is an initiative of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Under this scheme, 5000 CBG plants will be set up by 2023-24 with a production target of 15 MMTPA.

Union Minister of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), Narayan Rane confirmed that India contributes 70% in the global production of Coir and 80% in the world trade of Coir products. In rural areas, more than 7.3 lakh people in India have been employed in the Coir industry of which 80% of people are women. Coir products have increased rapidly due to its ‘environment-friendly’ image and in the year 2020-21, the export of coir and coir products reached the level of Rs 3778.97 crore, with a 17 % growth rate and 37% in value. So MSME Minister, Narayan Rane said that this industry will be developed in the Konkan, north-eastern regions.

Therefore, these hand-held kapas plucker machines are one of the best options to bring down the cost for the farmers at the farm level. These machines are light in weight (about 600 grams) and affordable to the farmers.

The Government of India has taken a step to increase the income limit of family pension to children/siblings who are suffering from mental or physical disabilities. Presently, the disabled child/sibling is eligible for family pension if his/her monthly income from sources other than a family pension is not more than Rs. 9,000. However, according to the new criterion, Any child/sibling will be eligible for family pension for life only, if his/her overall earning remains less than the entitled family pension at an ordinary rate i.e. 30% of the last pay drawn.

The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has successfully completed the test of a new version of Akash Missile named as ‘Akash Prime’ from Integrated Test Range (ITR) located in Chandigarh, Odisha. This new missile in its test intercepted and destroyed an unmanned aerial target. This target acted as an enemy aircraft during its maiden flight test.
