The International Olympic Day is the day dedicated towards celebrating the world’s largest sports extravaganza. Every year on June 23, the whole world celebrates this day to mark the idea of Olympics and to promote physical fitness. Thousands of people including young and old, participate in sporting and cultural activities, such as runs, exhibitions, music and educational seminars on this day. National Olympic Committees of various countries organize these events. Olympic day has its own significance that lies in the history of the games and over the last two decades this event has helped to spread the Olympic ideals to every corner of the world. Even during this unprecedented time of pandemic, the Olympians around the globe have been trying to inspire the world with their energy and positivity.

In the year 2020, Olympic Movement celebrated International Olympic Day by creating the world’s largest 24 hour digital-first Olympic workout videos. Through these videos, athletes have been helping fans to get through the crisis caused by the deadly coronavirus. In the videos they shared their daily workouts sessions as well as tips for staying healthy from body and mind during lockdown.

This year, amid the ongoing pandemic, the theme for International Olympic Day is to stay healthy, stay strong, and stay active. Social media is also floating with #OlympicDay posts which include videos of workouts and this shows the excitement of people to celebrate this day. Like the previous year, this year the world also celebrates this day virtually. For the year 2021, the Olympic organization has created a brand new home exercise video featuring Olympics competitors in the run-up to Olympic Day. Athletes featured in the video are Laurie Hernandez of the United Stated, Martin Fourcade of Canada, Lutalo Muhammad of Great Britain, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, and many more.

History of International Olympic Day:

On the day of 23rd June, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was formed in 1894 and later it commemorated International Olympic Day. During the 41st session of the IOC in 1947 in Stockholm, the committee member Dr. Gruss presented a report on World Olympic Day celebration and this became the day of promoting the Olympic idea. Some months later, on the occasion of the 42nd IOC Session in St Moritz which was held in January 1948, the project of promoting Olympic idea was adopted.

Moreover, the National Olympic Committees were put in charge of organizing this event. They were requested to choose a date between 17 and 24 June, to celebrate the foundation of the International Olympic Committee at the Sorbonne, Paris, on 23 June 1894. On the same occasion Pierre de Coubertin obtained the revival of the Olympic Games.

India and its Relation with Olympic:

The India and its relation with the Olympic is many years old. India has been participating in the Olympic events before the independence. India first participated at the Olympic Games in 1900, with only a single athlete named Norman Pritchard representing the country. He won two silver medals in athletics and with this India became the first Asian nation to win an Olympic medal. Later in 1920 the nation had sent a team for summer Olympics and since then India was continuously participating in the event. Consequently, India has won medals in different events since then.

During this critical time period, the world has been inspired by Olympians around the globe with their energy and positivity. They are motivating people to stay fit and healthy as the situation across the world is not good because of the outbreak of different varients of coronavirus. Outbreak of the virus was so influential that 2020 Summer Olympics Games scheduled to be held in Tokyo had to be postponed to 2021.  

Now, when most of the countries have started vaccination program and are witnessing decline in the Covid cases, Summer Olympic 2020 will be held from 23rd July to 8 August in 2021. This time Japan’s Tokyo got the opportunity to host this game of 32nd edition of Olympics. Many athletes around the world are preparing themselves in full force to compete in the upcoming event. People are also enthusiastically waiting for the upcoming Olympic Games, as it will divert their mind from the disastrous situation and help them to keep rejuvenated. These games will also inspire people to keep themselves healthy and fit.
