Deal Signed Between Government of Odisha and ArcelorMittal to Set up Steel Plant

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Chairperson and CEO Lakshmi Vilas Mittal of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel on March 4, 2021 for setting up of a 12 million tonne integrated steel plant. Consequently, an investment of Rs 50,000 crores will be introduced in the district of Kendrapara, Odisha for the establishment of the plant.

Three IITs in Top 100 of QS World University Rankings 2021

Three IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) have made it to the list of top 100 engineering institutes in the QS World University Rankings 2021. IIT Bombay has been placed at 49th rank followed by IIT Delhi (54) and IIT Madras (94). 25 courses of Indian universities have also made it to top 100 list by subject. 

Education Minister Inaugurates World Book Fair 2021

Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank inaugurated First ever virtual edition of New Delhi World Book Fair (NDWBF). The 2021 fair to be held virtually from March 6 to March 9. It is the 29th edition of the coveted book fair. Theme of this year’s book fair is National Education Policy 2020.

DRDO Tests SFDR Technology Off Odisha Coast

Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has successfully tested SFDR (Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet) technology from Integrated Test Range Chandipur off the Odisha coast. DRDO carried out a flight demonstration based on this technology.

The Soviet Cross-Country Skiing World Champion- Margarita Maslennikova Dies

On March 5 2021, Margarita Maslennikova, a Soviet cross-country skier, passed away in St. Petersburg at the age of 92. She won the Soviet championship in individual 10-kilometer race in 1954. She was also the winner of the Soviet championship in relay skiing several times in the 1950s.

Nikolai Snesarev, Acclaimed Coach of India’s Women Distance Stars, Dies

Coach Nikolai Snesarev has passed away at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala at the age of 72 on March 5. She was a tough taskmaster credited for the success of women distance runners at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou and the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

Snesarev first coached Indian athletes in 2005. After 5 years his proudest moment when Preeja Sreedharan and Kavita Raut won gold and silver respectively in the 10,000 metres. Consequently, Sudha Singh took the steeplechase gold at Guangzhou. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Lalitha Babar, also trained by Snesarev, reached the final of the steeplechase, a first for an Indian track athlete since PT Usha 32 years earlier.

PM of India and Sweden held a Virtual Summit on Bilateral Issues

Prime Ministers of both the nations i.e. India and Sweden exchanged their views on global and regional issues. They also discussed the bilateral relations between both countries. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that this was the 5th interaction between two leaders. Consequently, the first interaction was held in 2015. After that, the Swedish Prime Minister had visited India in February 2016 for Special Make in India week. Later, the Indian Prime Minister also visited Stockholm in April 2018 for the “First India Nordic Summit”. In April 2020 both nations held the meeting to discuss the situation of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Tsunami Warnings Issued in New Zealand

The National Emergency Management Agency issued a Tsunami warning in the coastal areas of New Zealand on March 4, 2021. An earthquake of magnitude 8.0 struck the north-eastern coast of the country in the Kermadec Islands region. Consequently, this was the third earthquake that struck the north-eastern area of the country. Earlier, following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook the same region.

UNGA Declared ‘2023’ as an International Year of Millets

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared 2023 as the “International Year of Millets.” The assembly also announced that India has proposed this year’s resolution. More than 70 of the 193 countries supported and passed this resolution. Moreover, Tirumurti, the Permanent Ambassador of India to the United States, shared the news. He also emphasized that this is a big step that will promote the ecological and nutritional benefits of millet worldwide.
