Government of India Increases Fertilizer Subsidy by 140%
The Government of India has increased fertilizer subsidies to Rs 1,200 per bag from May 19, 2021. However, earlier it was Rs 500 per bag. Thus, the government has now increased the subsidies by 140%. Moreover, the prices of fertilizers in the country are increasing at a faster rate. The reason for this is because prices of ammonia, phosphoric acid, etc. are increasing internationally. Consequently, Indian government was spending Rs 80,000 crores for chemical subsidies. Now, with the increase in subsidy, it will spend an additional Rs 14,775 crores.
Proposed Framework for Gold Exchange in India
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has issued a consultation paper on the proposed gold exchange system in India. Finance Minister of India announces this idea of gold exchange. Consequently, the government gives the task of regulating the exchange to SEBI which includes vaulting, assaying gold quality, and establishing delivery standards.

India set up its first Agriculture Export Facilitation Centre in Pune
The Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce Industries and Agriculture and NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) have recently launched the first Agricultural Export Facilitation Centre in Pune. This Centre will aid in boosting the agricultural and food exports of the state of Maharashtra. It will also act as a one-stop shop to export agricultural food productions. Consequently, this centre is open to anyone who is involved in agricultural exports.
Biological E will manufacture Johnson and Johnson COVID Vaccine in India
Biological E will produce Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine along with its own vaccine. However, the manufacturing units of the vaccines will be different. This is done to boost the overall vaccine production of India. The Biological E of India is going to produce 600 million Johnson and Johnson Vaccine doses annually. Moreover, US will fund the vaccines of Johnson and Johnson produce by Biological E in India. Biological E also plans to produce 75 million to 80 million doses of its own vaccine in Hyderabad.

Medicine from the Sky Pilot at Vikarabad Hospital
The state government of Telangana has selected 16 major medical centers (PHCs) to test the ambitious “air medicine”. These sectors are located around the Vikarabad Regional Hospital. These hospitals have cold chain facilities that is why they have been selected as the central point. The state government also selects a consortium of seven operators led by Blue Dart Med-Express. The government will initially launch the project within a VLOS range of 500 meters and will gradually expand it to a range of 9 km.

Telecom operator Reliance Jio has recently made an alliance with global partners and submarine cable supplier Subcom. All three companies will build the largest international submarine cable system with India as the center to meet the growing data demand.

Arjan Bhullar, a first Indian fighter to become MMA World Champion
On May 16, 2021, Arjan ‘Singh’ Bhullar became the first Indian fighter to win the ONE Heavyweight World Title at the top-level (Mixed Martial Arts) MMA Championship event in Singapore. He won the title after defeating the longtime heavyweight king Brandon ‘The Truth’ Vera.
Moreover, Asia’s largest global sports event i.e. ONE Championship witnessed ONE Super Series debut of a Thai striking phenom. It also witnessed four mixed martial arts contests and a battle for the ONE Heavyweight World Title. Bhullar ended the five-year championship-winning run of the Filipino-American fighter Brandon Vera in the main event. However, in the first round, he stifled Vera and took him down and in the second round he saw Vera gasping for air.

Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Bill passes in United States
To speed up the review of the potential COVID-19 related hate crimes and incidents, on May 18, 2021 US passed an anti –asian hate crime bill. The bill prevents the hate crimes against Asians as reported at the federal, state, and local levels. It will also create a new position at the Justice Department.
Central Tibetan Elected Penpa Tsering as its President
Penpa Tsering, a former speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile has been elected as the President of the Central Tibetan Administration. The officials informed media about this on May 14, 2021. Consequently, Wangdu Tsering Pesur who was the Chief Election Commissioner of the Tibetan government-in-exile give information regarding this. However, via online conference he informed that Penpa Tsering was successfully able to secure 34,324 votes for the post of ‘Sikyong’ (President) of the 17th Parliament-in-Exile of the Central Tibetan Administration.

Despite the concerns over the COVID-19 variant detected, the lockdown rules have been eased in England, Wales and most of Scotland. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also said that the nation has reached another milestone in lifting lockdown restrictions. However, he requested to the citizens to continue to play their part in stopping coronavirus and take responsibility when enjoying new freedoms.
US Government Pledges to Globally Share 80 Million COVID-19 Vaccines
On May 17, 2021, the US President Joe Biden announced that the country will share 80 million vaccine doses globally over the next six weeks. However, this amount of vaccines shared by US is five-time more than any other country has shared to date. During his address, US President Joe Biden also stated that the states government is taking an additional step to help the world. Moreover, he added that the US will never be fully safe until the pandemic is under control. Therefore, the Government has decided that over the next 6 weeks, the country will be sending 80 million vaccine doses overseas.
