The parents of Sir MV were scholars in Sanskrit. Sir M Visvesvaraya completed his early education in village and went to Bangalore for higher studies where he completed his graduation in Arts. Later, he went on to pursue Civil engineering and completed the course from College of Engineering from Pune. He was instrumental in development and implementation of varied systems of irrigation, flood protection, etc. at different places of the country. Apart from this, he contributed hugely in the construction of several establishments. He was honoured with the India’s highest civilian award – the Bharat Ratna in 1955 by the government of India.

Why do we celebrate National Engineer’s Day?

Sir M Visvesvaraya was an expert of irrigation and flood disaster management. His ground-breaking works in these fields are commendable as he introduced new and modern irrigation techniques as well as flood control and mitigation system. He designed ‘automatic barrier water floodgates’ which was installed in Pune in 1903. He also designed the Krishanasagar dam which is considered as one of the largest dams in India.

After completing his career spanning four decades as an engineer, he established the famous and fifth Government Engineering College of India, the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, in 1917. Sir MV was a member of the Governing Council of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and later he also became a member of the governing board in Tata Iron and Steel. For the uncountable efforts and huge role played towards the nation’s assets and growth, India celebrates his birthday as National Engineer’s Day. Besides India, other two countries – Sri Lanka and Tanzania also celebrate this day.
