Maruti Suzuki India Limited Joins IIM Bangalore to Nurture 26 Startups

The two organizations, Maruti Suzuki and IIM Bangalore together are going to develop and mentor 26 startups (from over 400 applications) in the mobility sector. Primarily, the selected startups will have to undergo a three-month pre-incubation period to enhance their learning and for gaining experience of regular one-on-one mentoring and advisory sessions. The ventures will be allowed to pitch for funding and then the selected ventures will advance for another six-month incubation journey.

Election Commission Announced Dates for Assembly Polls in 5 States

Election Commission of India announced poll dates for assembly elections in five states on 26th February 2021. Elections are to be held in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry. In West Bengal, polls will begin from 27th March and will be completed in 8 phases till 29th April. Assam will vote in 3 phases while Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry will vote in single phase on 6th April. Results for all state elections will be declared on 2nd May 2021. A population of more than 18 crore is eligible to vote in these elections as per CEC.

The India Toy Fair 2021 Begins from 27th February

PM Narendra Modi inaugurated first India Toy Fair on 27th February 2021 via videoconferencing.  The fair will be organized virtually from 27th February to 2nd March. More than 1000 exhibitors from 30 states and union territories will showcase their products through this event.

India’s First Carbon Watch Launched in Chandigarh

Chandigarh has become first state to launch Carbon Watch in India. A first of its kind mobile application will assess carbon footprint generated by an individual. After downloading the app, user have to fill the details regarding water, energy, waste generation and transport. According to WHO, carbon footprint is the measure of the impact created by people’s activities on the amount of CO2 generated by burying of fossil fuels. It is expressed in terms of weight of carbon dioxide in tonnes.

PM Modi Inaugurates Khelo India Winter Games at Gulmarg in J&K

On February 26, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the second Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. Athletes from 27 states are competing in the Games which will conclude on March 2. Athletes from Union Territories are also competing in this winter games.

Jal Shakti Ministry Announces 12 Iconic Sites for Transforming Them into Swachh Tourist Destinations

Under the Jal Shakti Ministry, the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) has announced the selection of 12 iconic sites. The department will transform these sites into ‘Swachh Tourist Destinations’ under Phase IV of Swachh Iconic Places (SIP). The government has taken this initiation under the campaign of Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen (SBM-G).

This initiative also aims to enhance the experience of both domestic and foreign visitors to the iconic sites by improving the sanitation and most importantly cleanliness standards at and around the sites. In addition, this announcement takes forward Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for transforming iconic heritage, spiritual and cultural places in the country.

Heavy Fighting Kills 27 People in Central Yemen

Rebels and government forces are fighting in Yemen’s oil-rich Marib. As a result of this, the heavy fighting has killed at least 27 people amid a resurgence of violence in the area. The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels earlier this month renewed their attack on Marib. The rebel offensive has faced stiff resistance and made little progress so far. The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity also said that the uptick in violence came over the past twenty-four hours. They also add that most of the dead were rebel fighters.

Sri Lanka has revised a controversial mandatory order to cremate the bodies of Covid-19 victims, which denied minority communities amid mounting international criticism. The country also stopped the forced cremation of Muslims and granted them religious rights. However, on Thursday the government has revised a gazette notification that they issued in April last year. Therefore, in the new notification government has allowed both burials and cremations.

But, the health sector needs new supplies urgently to stay ahead of a mutating virus that has killed more than 500,000 Americans.
