Rising Coal Imports

India’s coal import rose by 15.1 per cent in December 2020. This increases about 23.63 million tonnes against 20.52 million tonnes in same month the previous year. Imports of non-coking coal were at 15.63 million tonnes in December 2020 compared to 14.21 million tonnes in the same month previous fiscal year.

In Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, a glacier burst on 7th February 2021. The tragedy triggered an avalanche and overflow in Alaknanda and Dhauliganga river system. Hydroelectric stations and five bridges were washed away in the disaster. Relief teams have found 14 bodies and more than 170 persons including employees of NTPC plant are still missing. PM Modi has announced Rs 2 Lakh each for the families of victims and Rs 50000 each for severely injured.

NASA has given contract for its astrophysics mission SPHEREx to SpaceX. The SPHEREx mission (Spectrophotometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) aims to perform an all-sky survey to measure the near-infrared spectra of approximately 450 million galaxies across the universe and 100 million stars inside Milky Way galaxy.

He died in USA on February 5, 2021 at the age of 67. Moreover, Spinks beat Ali by decision in a 15-round fight in 1978 to win the title.

Former India Davis Cup Tennis Team Coach Akhtar Ali Dies at 81

Former India tennis coach Akhtar Ali passed away at the age of 81 in Kolkata on February 7, 2021. He represented India in Davis Cup between 1958 and 1964. Ali also won National squash championship in 1968.  He was National tennis team coach from 1966 to 1993. Under his guidance, the Indian team — comprising Krishnan, Mukerjea, Premjit Lall and S.P. Misra — reached the Davis Cup final in 1966. India repeated the feat in 1974 with the team featuring Vijay and Anand Amritraj, Shashi Menon and Jasjit Singh. Akhtar was conferred the Arjuna Award in 2000 for his lifetime contribution to tennis.

Ex-West Indies Fast bowler Ezra Moseley Dies at 63

Former West Indies fast bowler Ezra Moseley has died on February 6, 2021 after his bicycle was hit by a car. He was 63 years old. Moseley played two Tests in 1990 and also nine ODIs between 1990 and 1991. He was banned following the rebel tour of South Africa in 1982-83.

On February 6, 2021, hindi theatre director Padma Shri Bansi Kaul take his last breath in New Delhi at the age of 71. He founded Rang Vidushak, a theatre group and also a theatre institute in Bhopal (MP) in 1984. He was also awarded with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1995 and Padma Shri in 2014.

6.3 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Philippines

An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale jolted the Davao del Sur province in the Philippines On Sunday, an earthquake shook the Davao del Sur province in Philippines. Authorities said the intensity of the earthquake was 6.3 on the Richter scale. The Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology said the quake, which struck at 12.22 p.m. (local time), hit at a depth of 15 m. The experts of the institute also said that the quake was tectonic in origin and will trigger aftershocks and cause damage.

On Saturday, inmates at a St. Louis jail set fires and caused flooding. They also broke the windows of the fourth-floor and threw a stationary bike, chairs and mattresses outside. Moreover, officials said the latest disturbance over concerns about the coronavirus pandemic stalled court proceedings. Dozens of law enforcement officers worked for several hours before bringing the riot under control. Almost around 115 inmates were responsible for this chaos. Moreover, officials described the group as extremely violent and noncompliant.

Authorities have blocked Chinese legal rights activist Guo Feixiong from leaving the country. The activist was going to the United States to meet his family. But after stopping him at the airport, he got missing and Chinese authorities have not given any word on this status. Before this Guo had messaged his friends that he would go on a hunger strike if China Authorities stopped him to leave the country to be with his wife who is undergoing treatment for cancer.
